Andy Gracie will talk about his process-based projects combining narratives around astrobiology, space exploration and theories about the origins of life, while placing centre stage an examination of the problematic relationships between art and science. Questioning: how do we begin to describe the topography of the relationships between hobbyism, DIY, science & the growing networks of independent cultural laboratories?
Andy Gracie works across various disciplines situated between the arts and the sciences. His activities have often involved a study of organic intelligence, emergent systems and the placing of technological agents in situations where they can share information and behaviours with natural systems and networked ecologies. Recently his work involves cultural examinations of the science of astrobiology; notions of the origins of life coupled with a re-examination of its boundaries. Employing scientific theory and practice to question our relationships with environment and the notion of the ‘other’ he simultaneously brings into focus the complex relationships between art and science.
